CS Brigadier General Buckner, in
an overnight communication, asked to meet Grant to discuss terms for the
capitulation of his army. Grant, after discussing with his senior
officers, sent back a quick note to Bucker, "No terms except unconditional
and immediate surrender can be accepted. I propose to move immediately
upon your works." Grant would become an immediate celebrity, in the
North. His initials now inferring US "Unconditional Surrender" Grant.
