Sent to the Confederate lines,
to support the 1st US Sharpshooters, the 3rd Maine Infantry would be the 1st
US Sharpshooters' reserve line and would cover their retreat from the Rebel
lines, in the Pitzer Woods. Commanded by US Colonel Moses Lakeman, the
3rd Maine would help provide critical intelligence on the movement of CS
Lieutenant General James Longstreet's 1st Corps movements, prior to their
attack on Sickles' lines. The 3rd Maine would suffer a 58% casualty
rate at Gettysburg.
