This is the Third Louisiana
Redan, at Vicksburg National Battlefield Park. From east of here, near
the Shirley House, US Major General John A. Logan, would attempt to
construct tunnels, and trenches, to this battery position. On June 25,
1863, Logan would detonate 2,200 pounds of black powder, under the redan,
leaving a crater forty feet wide, and twelve feet deep. An infantry
assault by the 45th Illinois Infantry regiment would be repulsed by
Confederate musketry. The Federals would withdraw from here, and the
siege would continue nine additional days.
